The Vicious Deep by Zoraida Cordova

Set against the backdrop of a Coney Island summer comes The Vicious Deep, the story of sixteen year old Tristan Hart whose life is turned upside down when the mermaids make an unscheduled return to land in search of their new king.

When a sudden storm pulls Tristan from lifeguard duty into a deadly riptide, he discovers what he really is—a prince of the Sea Court. Turns out, his girlfriend hopping and talents as a swimmer aren’t caused by his teenage prime hormones after all.

In this modern Arthurian tale with a twist, when all a guy wants to do is get The Girl and enjoy the freak show that is a Coney Island summer, Tristan has to fight for his life, the lives of his friends, and his humanity, if he still wants it, as he’s caught in a race for a throne that is as ancient as the gods.

Dear Reader,

One day my name will be synonymous with mermaids and merdudes. While some might run to the hills for being known as “the mermaid girl,” it’s far better than being called a “cat lady.” Note: I don’t own any cats.
My debut novel, The Vicious Deep, on a larger scale is more than about mermaids. But you’ll have to read that for yourself. It’s about a guy who discovers a completely new part of himself. And YES, even that part. Tristan is faced with fighting for his life, his friends, and a lineage he’s only just discovering.
This is why I figured the world needs a little more Tristan Hart.

Zoraida: I understand you’re fresh out of Book 1 of The Vicious Deep?
Tristan: No spoilers, lady. And yes. It’s been wild. But I’ve got a pretty good idea of what to do. Well, more than I did before. Sort of.

Z: Describe yourself in three words or less.
T: Uhh, totally confused and itchy.

Z: What’s your favorite memory?
T: That’s easy, it was with Layla. She’s this girl you see. More than “this girl.” You know what I mean. She’s my best friend. Only, I want her to be more than that. We finally—

Z: Go on.
T: Cheater. That would be spoiling. Next.

Z: Prude. What’s you favorite thing about being a merman?
T: Swimming. I’ve always been a swimmer. Captain of my team and everything. But the moment I shifted, it was this whole new feeling. Like this entire time I’ve been swimming with ankle weights and now they’re gone. I’m pretty fast.

Z: I bet you are.
T: Why you gotta say it like that for? I’m going back…over there.

*splash*

This story about mermaids sounds pretty fun and Tristan's entertaining personality shows this in his quick interview.
